Tip 2: Get your site into top directories

Sorry, you are not logged in. Please login to get full access to this page or register if you're not registered yet.

An Internet directory specializes in linking to other sites and categorizing those links. Directories often allow site owners to directly submit their sites for inclusion, and many directories have editors review submissions for fitness.

Here is an example from http://www.a-free-directory.info/

Example of an Internet directory
Example of an Internet directory

You see, here're categories where websites are sorted out. On the website, you can click any category or subcategory to view what's inside.

For SEO purposes, such directories are a good way to obtain one–way links and make your rankings grow.

Get listed in Internet directories, in the categories that suit you — and you'll not only see an increase in traffic but also get a lot of one–way inbound links.

The two big directories that everyone wants to be in are Yahoo! and DMOZ.org (aka Open Directory Project). They are both powerful in bringing you traffic and valuable links. Yahoo! requires an annual submission fee, while DMOZ is free. If you're listed in these two, Search Engines will look at you with particular respect, partly because all members there are "hand–picked" — you suggest your website for inclusion, and real people look at it and decide — to add or not to add.

Use these links to submit to Yahoo! Directory:
https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro/

and to DMOZ:
http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

Once again, after you suggest your URL, it'll get reviewed by real people: these directories always consider inclusion of a site.

Not only Yahoo!, but also some other top directories require you to pay for inclusion — or to be considered for inclusion. Others ask you to put a link to them in exchange. However there are also numerous directories that will accept your website without payment or a link back.

All you have to do is find the ones that accept free submissions, and you will get your one way inbound links.

Directories that are worth your while

There are hundreds of thousands of directories on the Net, so which ones are worth your time?

Well, I made up a small list for you, to use it for the start. Here it is:

URL PageRank
http://directory.ldmstudio.com 5
http://www.searchsight.com 5
http://www.info-listings.com 5
http://www.mavicanet.com 5
http://www.newwebdirectory.com 5
http://www.prolinkdirectory.com 5
http://www.worthwhilelink.com 5
http://www.canlinks.net 5
http://www.skoobe.biz 4
http://www.zunchdirectory.com 4
http://www.freewebsitedirectory.com 3
http://www.directoryvault.com 3
http://www.linkcentre.com 3
http://www.theeverywherepages.com 3
http://www.wowdirectory.com 3
http://www.plentylinks.com 3
http://www.theshoppings.com 3

(By the way, don't get surprised if you see these directories have a different PageRank — I told you it tends to change.)

I've got some more directory lists for you. Firstly, check this forum thread to find some good hand–picked directories:
http://www.link-assistant.com/seo-talk/viewtopic.php?t=97

Besides, you'll find a huge list of Web directories in the SEO tool called SEO SpyGlass.

And you can always find more, for instance if you search in Google for the term submit URL.

Relevant links count best

That's another useful tip: don't forget about relevance. That's really important for links. Firstly, choose suitable directories where to add your site, and don't waste a second on irrelevant ones.

Want examples? If you're selling trailer tires, I doubt that a link from a photography directory will do any good. Better seek for links from a special directory for automobiles.

Also, choose in which category to put your link.

For example even if the whole directory is for cars and vehicles, it's wise to put your link into the category "tires" or "trailer tires", rather than, say, "carwash".

I guess you get the point.

DO IT NOW! Get your website listed in relevant categories of some good Internet directories — that's easy, fast, and mostly free.

Some directories required reciprocal link exchange. Is it good for SEO or not. if yes, then our outbond links don't look like relevant links. Please explain.

Reciprocal link exchange with topically relevant sites is nothing bad (that is link exchange). As for the directories - it is much better to have one-way links from them.

What about directory submission services? Has anyone experiences with services like that?

I had a look at "Directory Maximizer" and it looks quite professional, I can define different titles and descriptions for the submissions. And I can select how many submissions at once. Looks like that I can define what is needed for a good SEO campaign.

Thanks
Ralph

There are many services out there and some good ones among them. Directory submission (to quality directories though) is definitely good for new sites.

what is the difference between directory to a link farm?

Answer
2010-05-28 06:58:18: Dan Richmond

Link farms are practically low-quality link directories with tons of unrelated links, they appear fast, grow and ten get detected by Google, so it's better not to leave links there. Directories usually have moderators that check submitted sites, links split into categories according t their topic and they exist for a long time and have Google's trust (decent PR for instance).

I've noticed that many "directories" have been downgraded to PR0 in the past few days. One website owner I contacted about this told me not to worry, that Google often does this for a few days before giving an upgrade in PR. Sounds fishy to me. I suspect these directories (including theshoppings.com, mentioned above) have been labelled as link farms by Google. But if this were true, wouldn't they get a "-", or less than a PR 0?

And what about sites that openly charge for links? Wouldn't they get less of a value attached to their outbound links than a free site? Thus negating the value of the paid link?

Be aware that Google is now much cuter about links from directories and article farms so unique content is more king than just content.

Personally I would steer clear of directories and focus on good quality article submission sites, social sites like facebook, digg etc. Use some spinning software to create a range of unique articles from the same piece of text.

Also remember that many directories and article sites now have built in "no-follow" tags which means the links you get are relevant for traffic (assuming the right people are reading it!) but not for ranking position.

Is there a certain amount of links I should limit to the directories?
