Introduction to your SEO guide

Sorry, you are not logged in. Please login to get full access to this page or register if you're not registered yet.

Hi, I'm Dan Richmond, and you're about to get hold of my break-through SEO in Practice guide. I stay online 24 hours a day, so sure, I know today's situation with SEO books. There're just so many of them!!! And yes, I know someone may be skeptical. But I may ask SO WHAT? I'm serious about making this book the best practical SEO guide ever, and here's the only way to prove this: check how it works.

So right now, in the book's introduction, I'll just try to answer the important questions you might ask me before you start. And then we'll get straight to action.

Firstly, here's a couple of words about why I wrote the book.

For the eight years I've been a professional SEO, I worked out winning strategies using the try and error method. Now I believe I'm expert enough to put the best of my experience into a practice-oriented SEO guide.

I've seen hundreds of clients, and you can take my word: each day, they keep asking the same things. And after 8 years in SEO I know this for sure: the main question here is not what it's about. It's definitely

WHAT ARE THE EXACT THINGS TO DO
TO MAKE GOOD MONEY WITH MY WEBSITE?

Now tell me honestly, among the hundreds of SEO books in the Internet, did you see any that teaches the exact simple steps to get to the top? So take me for a humbug if you like, this tutorial is unique. It answers the "what-should-I-do" questions my clients keep asking me for years.

I know you also have some general questions about SEO. Same thing, I answered them a million times and now's yet another one.

The first problem you have to decide at once is:

To SEO or not to SEO?

If you check it on the Web, you'll find there're other ways to get traffic ( = visitors ) to your site and thus to make money. Say, pay per click campaigns (PPC) like Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, or Microsoft adCenter.

Here's what I can say, and it's not a personal opinion, but a common fact: PPC brings results fast, but you have to pay all the time. The sums get rather big. And you never know for sure, whether PPC will pay for itself, or it's just money down the drain.

SEO is different, in terms of investment and effect. First you pay (and all of us SEOs know that real optimization costs are very small), and some months later you start getting dramatic results. Yes, SEO pays for itself hundreds of times better, in the long run.

The amount of traffic that SEO will bring you is unlimited. You'd simply go bankrupt trying to get as many visitors with PPC campaigns.

Read what happened to one of my clients: in March 2006, they launched a new online gift store. At once, they started a PPC campaign and spent about $40,000 within 3 months. In return, it only brought $28,000.

At the same time in March, I started an SEO campaign for them. All in all, it cost less than $14,000 (including my charges, which are quite big). And, by December 2007, the estimated gain from SEO was $122,000, which is 4.4 times more than Pay Per Click could bring.

As you can see, even if you pay an expert to optimize your company's site, this pays for itself dozens of times over! And if you do SEO yourself, your costs are so small, and your profits can exceed them by not even dozens, but hundreds of times!

Thus an ideal solution is, go ahead with SEO, and launch a PPC campaign at the same time, to get some traffic from it before your SEO efforts start bringing you real money. And remember: PPC brings pennies, compared to what you get with SEO.

The second question is,

Should I do SEO myself, outsource it to a freelancer, or pay an SEO company to do it for me?

What if you hire a freelancer?

Firstly, you can never trust he's doing it right.

What if he goes the wrong way and your site gets banned? How are you going to control an outsourcer? Moreover, he will ask for a fat sum.

Read this search engine optimization guide, and you'll know how to check what a freelancer's doing at any moment and what it's really worth.

An SEO company will charge a lot.

(When I say a lot, I mean it!)

And, if you trust them to start your SEO campaign from scratch, they will do exactly the same things you can do with this book, or even less — but you'll have to pay thousands of dollars, monthly.

Now, please think of yet another thing: since I started working in Link-Assistant.Com in 2005, my clients' businesses gained over $37,000,000 due to web promotion. And believe me, the best part of these 37 mln could have been made without my assistance, had my clients read this book.

Read this SEO guide, and I'll be sure that you'll never pay an SEO company more than they deserve.

DIY is free, but requires knowledge and time.

Yet with this book in your hands, you'll get all the knowledge you need. And it'll save you a lot of time, firstly, because you don't have to educate elsewhere, and secondly, because it teaches you to make abundant use of SEO tools that make it hundreds of times faster.

And, it's not at all hard. All strategies I provide here were devised for real-world clients in order to earn real-world money. And here's my word: to make a boom of sales, you need the simple universal things I teach here.

Call it a schedule, a manual, or whatever — this book is like taking you by the hand and guiding you, step by step, up to the point when you break a bank with your site.

Here're five curious facts about web search:
  • When Internet users look for information, services or products to buy, more than 8 out of 10 rely on search engines, not simple surfing.

  • 85% of these searchers don't click on paid links.

  • 63% of links that are naturally displayed at the top of search engines get clicks.

  • Being naturally found at the top (due to SEO, not to payment) converts 30% higher ( =  brings 30% more money).

  • Over the last year, Pay-per-click (PPC) costs have grown 37%, and they go on rising.

So here's my idea:

as long as you start, do SEO (whichever way you like), and use this book. Mind it, with this guide you'll be in fact doing things a professional SEO would do — and it'll turn out easy and free!

After that, when your site is flourishing, you can afford to pay for very sophisticated SEO tricks. Yes, a grown-up site may need personal approach. So that will be the right time to hand it out to SEO experts (of course if you find that necessary).

You can even address me then, and I'll be happy to make your perfect site even better. So if you want to discuss your own SEO-related questions with me, just email me at

One more thing we have to discuss now:

Who can do SEO (= Who is this book intended for?)

The general answer is: everyone. Anyone who could be my client will save a fat sum and gain much more — all with this book.

And among my clients, there were medical centers, financial consultancies, music shops, wildlife refuges and what-not. I knew a guy who was selling pottery on the web and a woman who founded an Internet community for people with lung cancer, a young lady who had an online art gallery and two brothers who owned a transportation business. And you won't believe me, but I even consulted (for free, cause he couldn't afford it otherwise) an 8-year-old boy whose dad made a site for him to trade soccer cards.

Thus if you have a website, you've come to the right place. And, it's time to see how you can make it work, free of charge!

Now you're mere seconds away from getting the first portion of my instructions.

So don't delay, get down to your SEO guide right now, and push your website to the top!

Hi everyone, glad to see my new fellow SEOs ;)

I have immense joy to make the first posting here and to invite you to talk.

I'd be happy to discuss with you the SEO techniques I'm offering. How does it work for you? Is anything unclear? On what points should I expand? Or what are your general thoughts on the tips I'm giving? Tell me whatever you think. Just stop by to say hi, or start a long debate - I'll be equally glad to see any kind of comments.

Whatever questions or ideas concerning the SEO in Practice guide and its content you have, let's talk and try to find answers. Still the regulations will be quite strict, as I hate spam. Quite sure if there're unrelated or offensive comments that have nothing to do with the guide's topic, I'll remove them. Ruthlessly. Period.

So let's talk SEO. Who's the first to chip in?

Hello Dan,

First of all thanks for your guide. All tips are seeming very valuable.
I look forward to further reading.
I wish to ask one thing that, what is relevance between search result and google page rank. If a websites page rank is higher than competitive website, then would it appear first for similar keywords search on Google?

A high PR is a good factor to have. However PageRank alone cannot guarantee you a higher ranking than a competitor. Read on to the guide and you will see what else influences a website's positions.

Pagerank is not so serious factor, because it is so easy to manipulate, if you have many sites, you can start the stopwatch for how fast you have the wished Pagerank with few links. I started one project with 10 sites. Promotiong the first of them to PR#2 all the others followed in weeks to same PR#2. And the Searchengines know that. Dan, am I right?

Answer
2010-04-27 09:42:52: Dan Richmond

Yes you are right. However it is easy to make a page PR2 and pass it on to other pages, while it's almost impossible to do the same trick with PR7, for instance.

I am thrilled that you have assembled this site and that I passed with flying colors on your first chapter. I just started my own home-based business as an SEO Strategist and I was looking forward to displaying my certificate on my little site. May I ask you a serious question, you want to provide professional SEO Service to Buisiness Owners etc.with your cute Website,0 optimized for any Keywords.(h2 tags = "for affordable prices")what is affordable prices? The lawyer to sue you.
The current Alexa Rank of your site (built in 2008) is 23.357.654 !!!
(if you even know what that means),
and asking these questions for a Experts lable. Are you serious? If you dont know how to copy images/ graphics from a site to steal it, you will never get one!
You are seriously offering SEO Service to clients, without even knowing the basics.
This is your Text on your portfolio page:

"We are working on bringing you samples of our work. In the meantime, please call us and we will personally provide samples, search engine successes and client references."
such as your own website?
I am sorry, this is first time of criticise s.o.here, but I am totally angry about the insolence, asking for a free SEO Experts Ceritficate with these expertise, it makes me incredibly angry, and to claim, that you were a trainee of Bruce Clay , is the top of impudence.
Now you want SEO in Practice giving you a certificate, for a test, every interested SEO trainee will pass easily?
You make me sick. Sorry thousand times for this agressive language, but it makes me sick.
Who would put his signature under your service?
Dan sorry, even if you have to delete this, I`ve never seen such an impertinence.

Hallo Dan,
thanks for the SEO book. I just started reading but
was surprised right at the beginning (here) that you state
facts and statistics without naming sources.
How can one trust anything if there is no info about
from WHEN those information is, and HOW they were
generated and by what (hopepfully) independent firm.

I would really appreciate if you could add this info to
your "facts" sheet so that I can actually use this interesting
information when I talk to my web design clients.

All this data was taken from Jupiter Research Corporation reports. (Sure it's been some time since SEO in Practice is online, so the data is getting older every day. Anyway the importance of search engine optimization is only growing.)

Hi Dan,

Like this book.

I was reading your link section and noticed that I did not know or see how to do the links. That is once you get them how do you install the link in your website (is there an easy way?). If there is specifically how do you do it? Can you put a 2 link in a 5 link place (not that you would want to but what if you did?).

Ted Costa

I was impressed about how to find a link and how to find the right links.

Answer
2009-03-31 08:39:16: Dan Richmond

@ted costa

Ted, as far as I can see you have no HTML knowledge at all so you will either need a webmaster or link building software like LinkAssistant (I'm talking about it in Part 5).
In LinkAssistant you find partners automatically and then generate a link directory (a special page for your website, with links to your link partners) and upload it to the web server staright from LinkAssistant (so that it can be seen on the Web). With LinkAssistant setting up links is easy and does not require HTML knowledge at all. Here is where you can learn more about LinkAssistant link building software and download the free version. And here is where you can get LinkAssistant in a bundle with other useful SEO tools saving a pretty sum.

Hi
appreciate it.
BUT any chance we can make this easier to read?

Does it "NEED" to be in a 5 inch wide window?
I mean how does a spiral bound graphic and left and right widget boxes help me to read a long and detailed document, exactly?

I'd even pay $$ for a PDF version I can read on my tablet.

I just hate reading detailed stuff on a screen.
So I'm never going to get to read this but thanks anyway!

Got a 5 line summary I can take away and actually use?

Cheers.

@john duke

Hey John,

Thanks for your comment. We are working at the PDF version of the book so that you can have a read of SEO in Practice in your favourite format.

SEO is too broad of a subject to fit it into 5 lines. If you really want to see your website on top of search results you need to invest some time into learning and what's more important implementing the things you learn. Give this book a read and I'm sure you'll find a lot more useful lines to take away and actually use ;)

Hi Dan,
I've just started following your book and using the SEO Powersuite. I've just played around with "link assistant" and spent a couple of hours filling in submission forms and got about 30 or so reciprocal links. This morning I checked my ranking expecting it to be much the same (position one on page three) where it's been for the last six months. Imagine my surprise when I saw it sitting at number eight on page one of google!

I've tried all sorts of books and tools to help move my ranking and this is the first that's worked. I'm now an avid convert to your way. Thanks for this book and the software!

hi all,

first of all "A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL"!

kindest regards from france (i apologize for my poor english! and if anyone finds an error, just keep it; it's free!) :)

@ dan:
a great site you have here (really, i mean it!)
to find knowledge (worth to be considered as it) for free is rare. youy said something like "yet another book, SO WHAT?" and i totally agree. someone said (i don't remember who): "the one who stops to want to be better, has stopped to be good!"!
to introduce myself:
i'm owning a website which is also some kind of guide through the web, also containing downloadable free tools such sitemap-generator a.s.o. (anotherone also! SO WHAT! this one at least really does the job in multiple formats, with automatic submission (if wanted)). and eventhough i didn't do ANYTHING for SEO, i find my pages being placed on top of the SERP (f.i. some have place 2 among millions). http://www.netsoutien.com which also has a robot-simulation (http://www.netsoutien.com/srchsee.php) which gives f.i. informations why a page is NOT indexed by the SEs a.s.o.!

so why is your work interesting for me? i'll try to explain it the short way: i also own a community-website (http://www.int-league.com), which in fact is my favorite, and it gives online-players the opportunity to create clubs, in order to organize tournaments (12 different types by now) in ANY game (as a matter of fact this website even is the only one (in the wildwildweb) with administrates "1 vs many". although this site is my favorite, it's also my greatest source of issues in SEO. although this site offers more options as any other similar site, noone cares (although everything is free; just as if the internauts follow the guideline "PEOPLE EAT SHIT! 'CAUSE 50 BILLIONS OF FLIES CAN'T BE WRONG!".
i truly hope to find some answers to my questions within your work.

kindest regards!

PS: as gunter did (for german) i offer my services to translate whatever you judge worth it into french!

Don`t everybody say how easy it all looks, and how professional everybody feels now, in continuous SEO there are many hidden traps, and many mistakes wait for you to do them.
Make something like this your first Question: Why should he even think about linking to me?
What can I offer for him as a "bait".

Answer
2010-04-12 11:04:13: Edmund Sykes

Hi Dan. As a diligent student, I read as much as I can about any subject before getting involved. I have read that reciprocal links don't count any more and I really don't understand how link-asistant is going to help me. In order to get me to understand, you've got to tell me what incentive I have for linking to other people from my website http://www.citibox.es . Now, if you can give me the reason why I should link to you and just how that will benefit me, I will eventually understand what I have to do to get others to link to me. I have understoof special offers, student discounts etc. but these take individual targeted efforts and your programme claims to automise the process. So please tell me why you would post a link to me and why I should post one to you and whether a reciprocal link is less valuable than a one-way one. I have other questions, but this is an excellent starter. Thanks. Edmund

Answer
2010-04-17 13:27:21: Dan Richmond

The reason is very simple. Any website has two "missions". From the owner's point of view, the mission is "make money" or "make friends" or "build community" etc. - something you've made your website for. From the visitor's point of view, the main thing about any website is USEFULNESS. Information. Help. (Or pleasure - depending what the site is about). If you think my website might be interesting to your users, you put a link to me. "Hey folks, you say, here's a great resource that will help you SEO your websites!" Then your visitor thinks "Thanks Edmund for sharing this link with me".
One more reason is pure SEO. We simply exchange links to have more links and seem more authoritative to Google.

Answer
2010-04-19 13:57:08: Thomas Kampling

Dear Edmund, who in this world told you that rec. Links do not count anymore?
Reciprocal Linkbuilding is the first Keyfactor for any SEO. Of course you check accurately who you link to, how themerelavant the site is, etc.
Linexchange can also bring many traffic to your site, if you find a high traffic partner.
Then never forget about tree or more- way linking.

E.g. Your site www.mine.com
links out to his site www.his.com
and in return his site,www.second_hissite.com links back to yours www.mine.com.
So the Searchengine donot see relations between these sites, sees them as one way links and gives them (if topic related) a higher value. But thats small margins.
Also Google knows about Rec. linkstrategies, and thinks, if both sites of a rec. constr. are of high quality,
well maintained, no spammy links on it, and human reviewed, both parties must be good quality sites that trade fair.
To link back to FFA`s or bannerfarms will surely harm your ranking, even if there are several of them.
2. If google sees, that you link out on a one way basis, to very high rankng, Authority sites in your themerange, that you try to promote high quality content. Just by pointing to authority sites on your special theme, to give your users access to info, that you cannot provide (without DC.)They see, that you acknoglege the authority of that site (no dir. competitors of course)wich gives you mor Domain trust in their sites. (I hope you get the point, english is ot my motherlanguage)

Answer
2010-04-25 18:49:20: Miguel Ayala

I totally agreed with Thomas Kampling. Reciprocal links of course don't count if you point A to B and viceversa and A is PR 4 and B is PR 4.

Unfortunately, theres's almost no chance that you will receive a reciprocal link from a website with a much higher PR than your website for free and buying links is a big no-no.

Reciprocal links works, only if the link that will link to you has a higher PR than your website, is theme based and you didn't pay for it. (almost impossible combination uh?)

2. Linking to authority sites related to your website content is good, plus avoid using the re="nofollow" tag to let the link juice floats freely. Don't try link sculpture.

Answer

> Reciprocal links of course don't count if you point A to B and viceversa and A is PR 4 and B is PR 4.

You are wrong here, they count. What exactly makes you think they do not?

Answer
2010-04-26 06:42:44: Thomas Kampling

Good point to avoid the "rel= nofollow" tag.
But still there is one big point about Pagerank. Everybody thinks, talks, and looks for Pagerank.
Forget about it.
No. 1 Rule for my SEO Strat. is: "Forget about Pagerank"

There are so many PR#1 sites ranking on No#1 in SE results.
Pagerank is so easy to manipulate, that it is not a serious ranking faktor to the SE.
The only thing to take care of is, when the Pagerank sign is greyed out, you would never link to it, because it is a spammy site, and devalued by Google for beeing spammy.

You might miss great opportunities for your linkbuilding if you only want to link with Pagerank 3+ sites.
Also the lower pagerank sites might be new, and their rank will rise too. Plus these links are easier to get.
Do you already use the Bookmarking sites for your Websites?

Answer
2010-04-27 09:46:21: Dan Richmond

Good points, Thomas, - especially about grayed out PR sites.

Relevance would be a great factor in your linking strategy - if someone wishes to be after high-PR links, let them go for that, while links from topically relevant sites are just as good if not even better.

Is it more SEO effective to have a navigation bar linking to each page in "parallel" (from all pages to each of the other pages) or is it a better practice to add a link to the next page at the bottom of each previous page - linking in "series"?

Furthermore, is it better to use the entire url of the page you are linking to IE.,

From http://www.HomePage.com to
http://www.HomePage.com/1stPage
http://www.HomePage.com/2ndPage

Or is it OK to link directly to each page without the http:

Answer
2010-04-29 10:58:35: Dan Richmond

1) It does not really matter. A navigation bar would speed up the indexing of your pages a bit, but in terms of link juice nothing really changes.

2) It's better to use the full address.

Otherwise, i used those keywords to our b2b platform for advertising, then i did search, i just found several results, but type some keywords like shoes, handbags,t shirts, our products are not in good rank, it is usually on the second page or third page, it is very strong competition. So, how do i do? are they good keywords just have several results when we do search? when people are looking for something to buy online, do they usually use one-word keywords,two-word keywords or three-word keywords? i am confused.

Thanks a lot and hope to hear from you.

Answer
2010-06-16 09:45:56: Dan Richmond

Your website is really over-stuffed with keywords. Each page has so many different keywords on it that the search engine bots will not really know what exactly your site is about. The best way would be to optimize each page for up to 3 keywords, so each page is optimized for 3 unique ones. In your case, an online shop, you will need to work on each product's page.

There is nothing wrong with the keywords themselves, they get high traffic from Google and other SEs but they will require a lot of work - first onpage optimization then link building. You could go through this guide firs, especially the landing page chapter, and then see what you can do.

I'm really happy to see this course! It was recommended to me by a successful internet marketer. This looks like some of the best material that I've seen online for SEO. I've spent some thousands of dollars on internet marketing training, but I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. Thanks for this information.

Dan, great stuff! I know I don't need to tell you there are maybe thousands of SEO snake-oil salesmen out there, but here you seem to have got it just right. Not too technical, but not the cheesy adverblurb hype like in your videos (bleeeaarch!). Question: How about a level 2 - Pros Only or Advanced section? Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Hi Dan,
I been blogging for the past 2yrs and while my sites have high page ranks. I am not listed in the top 10 of Google, neither have I earned anything. I am bankrupted and at my end. In the next few weeks I may be disconnecting my lines and broadband connection. School opens in a few weeks and I don't even see 2 cents to start my kids at school. I am really hoping that this tutorial will save me and my family.

2010-08-18 23:22:54: E Ramage

Thanks Dan,
Well first I must say I learn't a lot so far from the first chapter especially the spy on your competition part. However what I don't understand is how I seem to be unable to break into Google's top 10 for the Keywords that count even when the competition is below 30k sites but for low or no traffic keywords I can get in to the top 5 no sweat even if the competition is above 100k.

Answer
2010-08-24 15:12:45: Carl Gallant

Hi Ramage,

Not sure if I am allowed to comment here. Please forgive me if I come across as being forward.

Dan, hope you don't mind...

I have discovered of late that the monthly searches and competing websites are merely guidelines and should not be your ultimate deciding factors.

If you are wanting to breakthrough the top 10, then you should be studying the top 10 in terms of their "on page" optimizing factors and "off page" optimizing factors.

Example: Do they have the keyword in the title, meta description, url or the H1 or H2 tags?

Off page refers mostly to "backlinks", know how much they have and see of you are able to implement a link building strategy, which will cause your site to outrank theirs.

Hope this helps.

Carl

Answer
2010-08-26 22:45:56: E Ramage

Thx for the response Carl. I certainly agree with you and I do apply that or similar strategy. However I recently learned 2 things. One Google sometimes rank you on two scales; global and local. E.g. using a tool called Google global I was able to notice that I ranked differently depending on the region I searched in, funny eh.

Second thing is as you said on page optimization is a factor and it also seems not all PR is the same PR I will get into that later. Re; on page I noticed my articles normally don't get noticed or ranked by Google from my main site even though I would do stuff like keyword in title URL etc. However recently I applied something I will call relevant keyword inclusion, in my articles I would normally use my keyword/phrase repetitively. In a recent article I used the main keyword along with similar meaning words, through this I was able to get to #8 on the top ten for that keyword. Another thing is it seems Google prefer some PR above others even if they are of the same Page Rank.

The PR story; Recently I did an article posted on a popular article directory it was placed 17 on Google and was like that for weeks. I decided to throw a few links to it via blog commenting it immediately fell to 200 even though the number of links and PR ratio was above the top sites in the index. What I did next was to created a video posted on Youtube and a rewrite of the article posted this on a few web 2.0 sites linking back to the article and its been rising ever since, Its now at 78 in the index.

Personally I think it was too much effort for something external to my main site but I was testing a theory and it seems to be true, time will tell.

Answer
2010-08-31 08:32:08: Dan Richmond

Well, I guess the answer lies exactly in the top 10 or top 20 for the keyword. Did you try looking at the amount of backlinks they have and at their keyword densities? Like Carl said above said very often the general amount of competition does not matter and there can be a tough top 10 guys who really work on SEO.

Answer
2010-09-03 21:17:38: E Ramage

Thx Dan,
I always examine my competition first I look for the # of backlinks, next the number of main Keyword anchor text in the back links and then the Page Ranks of the back links. Then I try to beat eh number of Back links along with the PR rank density and Key word Anchor density. Frankly backlinking is the most challenging part of SEO for me.

can I repeat "title="dsa" many times?

Answer

You can do that of course, but titles do not really have any SEO meaning, so you might want to put some explanatory text for users there, so they can know where to they are about to go if they click the link. So, use the link titles for users rather then for the search engines.

I went through this course and decided to come back and take it over again.
There are three reasons for that:
1. I'm too lazy to spend a lot of time writing content for my website, so I thought I would justify my wasted time by reading up on SEO, even though I don't actually need to.
2. The course is well writen.
3. Paying attention to the basics is the constant duty of anyone who desires success.
Actually, the last of the three reasons is why I'm reviewing the material.

Hello Dan,

I'm a builder and my industry ha been hit hard by the economy. I started a local online network where membership is based upon a real referral: www.santacruzconstructionguild.us
It's two years old and we have grown to 145 members. Average traffic is 400 visitors every week to a local site. The site gets page one Google results for many of the main keyword terms. I guess I got lucky.

Now that I have become proficient in WordPress I am learning SEO, as I am expanding the guild to neighboring areas. Now that I'm learning SEO I understand how lucky I got because the site has almost no backlinks but gets great SEO.

I found your site via Brad Callen's SEO pages. His software does not work on Macs, and I'm sure as hell not going to buy a WIndows machine. SEO Power Suite works on the Mac, so I am investigating it. I just started reading your book. Thanks! I'm impressed. I'm going to read/study the book first before buying any software.

I like how you do business.

Not necessarily. PR simply determines how much authority an outgoing link would bear, but very often pages without high Google PR rank higher.

Surely it depends on your website. For a blog with no keywords it's wanting to track for a high level of PR and authority is quite important. But you only need to search in Google to see that it does not display results according to PR but relevance. There is a lot more than SEO, but it's an important and useful tool that correctly used can help you rank more and Dan raises some good points in the book.

Reading this far I find everything very interesting as I am sure the rest of your work is.
I have a question of you which is will SEO help me. I don't sell anything, I don't have a business that helps people with problems. What I do have is a web address, better said a sub-domain to Hubpages which is a writing website. So one could say I'm a writer. I am affiliated through my website to Amazon, EBay, and AdSence. Ofcource I search for the best title for my stories and each month I am starting to make pennies(and I mean only pennies).
My question is, will all this wonderful work that you have done help me???
