5.3 Make brilliant link directory that perfectly fits your site

Sorry, you are not logged in. Please login to get full access to this page or register if you're not registered yet.

Before you ask for a link back to you, wouldn't it be nice if you make a good–looking link directory of your own? Besides your homepage, link directory will be the first thing your potential partner will look at, when deciding whether to give you this link or not. Want your link partners think about you as a respectful expert? Then make your links page look professional. That's the next step of link building.

Step 4. Place a link to them on your site

This works like clock, once you set up a couple of things.

Firstly, set categories for partners.

If you want to create a link directory where links will be arranged in categories (a tree–like structure, as we call it), go to Preferences -> Link Directory Settings -> Categories and create several categories for your links. Of course you'll be able to edit your category list at any time.

After that you can put each link partner into a matching category, just select the necessary partners, and use the right–click menu for settings, like the screenshot shows:

Setting partners' category
Setting partners' category

Secondly, generate and upload your link pages.

Generate button Click the button Generate and go through the wizard in the tool. All's clear there so you won't need my help. In the end you'll have a link directory, fitting your site's design like a glove — and all this without any HTML knowledge or webmaster skills!

Now it's time to show it to your link partners, asking for something in exchange — so let's go to the next step.

I wonder if this auto-page generation and publishing will work within the CMS I am using www.wilshirewebedit.com.
Have you had any experience with your program integrating into a CMS? I am going to try it and see what happens. :)

Hi Dan, loving the book. Putting much of it to test and trialing the seo powersuite too which looks like a great tool.....but!

I've used the submission form part of link assistant along with keyword suggestion to identify websites to link to. I experimented with getting about 40 links over a few days.

The on-page stuff is reasonably well optimized too according to the software................and yet the website has plummeted from page 3 to page 5. I wouldn't mind if it were my site but it's a friends. I don't know what I've done wrong. Are you able to spot anything I might have done which is stupidity on my part? website is www.prestigeconservatoryblinds.co.uk

Thanks.

Andy

Andrew,
1) If you got a lot of links for that website within a short period of time it is possible that Google dropped it for a few days but will look better into links and lift it higher than before. This happened quite often especially with websites having not too many links.

2)There might be a link from some bad-reputation site.

3)While you got some of the links some earlier links might have been removed. Are you sure that you have all your earlier links in the same places?

4) How long did the drop happen? Maybe it coincided with Google's algo changes.

It's hard to say what's causing the drop without knowing what exactly you've been doing recently. Simply looking at the website can hardly help.
Also, have you done any on-page changes or only link building?

Hi Dan,

I've completed SEO in Practice! Yeehaw! Thanks for your reply to my previous post, it's hard to know whether to dis-believe what you say or take comfort in it.

However, sure enough, the website has jumped back up to page 3 and I'm breathing a sigh of relief. I guess it was Google reviewing things.

I do have another question though, I've been adding links today and have got around 10 from blogs and forums etc plus one featured link which will appear on around 700 different pages. When I ran SEO Spyglass to look at the client's website it wasn't showing these links. Is it likely to be due to a time lag or should it show up instantly? Or am I missing something here?

Andrew,

Ranking fluctuations are to be expected, especially when you're actively optimizing a site. Often you'll see your rankings go down or if your site is not ranked high, it may even drop out of top 100 for a short period of time. It may happen for a couple of days and then your rankings will be restored, in most cases higher than before the drop. I see this happen all the time and there's nothing to be worried about.

Yes, you're right the newly acquired links don't show up in SpyGlass due to a time lag. The lag depends on how often the search engine crawlers visit the site. SpyGlass shows you the links that search engines know about, i.e. the links that contribute to the site's rankings. When these links get indexed by the search engines they should start showing up in SpyGlass.

Hi Dan.

I'm reading this "walkthrough" and I really love it.

I'm trying the trial version of SEO PowerSuite and it's really great. But I'm having some kind of troubles.

I'm from Spain, and in fact, i'm trying to optimize a website for Spanish Google server. Even if I try selecting "Google(La web)" from the LinkAssistant Preferences, it's not getting any partners. It just finds CEO's websites and so.

Is there any way to get the links correctly if it is not from google.com ?

By the way, great work on writing this book.
