Tip 4: Comment in forums and blogs

Sorry, you are not logged in. Please login to get full access to this page or register if you're not registered yet.

Have you ever heard that Google and friends think much of blogs and forums? If not, then I'm the one to tell you they definitely do. What's the conclusion? For traffic and rankings, you simply must try to get links from forums and blogs.

Find the ones with a topic close to your site and join discussions there. How do you get a link? Easy: most often, in forums you can put a text link to your site into your signature.

Forum signature
Forum signature

In blogs, you link your name back to your site. I mean, you specify your name and URL and this transforms into a link to your site, with the name as an anchor, like here:

Blog commentator's name
Blog commentator's name

And even though many forums and blogs attach a rel="nofollow" attribute to these links, still you're getting visitors who're really interested in you.

Here's a warning by the way: do not leave spammy comments.

If you're a frequent guest at any forum you must know how weird it may look. Say, you're discussing the new iPhone and its warranties from Apple, and someone makes a posting:

"Get used cell phones cheaply" and a link.

Why in the world should I care for used phones??? So be careful not to annoy people with your advertising and links. You may not only earn the reputation of an idiot and spammer. Forum or blog admin may kick you out for violating the rules.

Do not write just for the purpose of this subscription link. Participate in discussions, post helpful comments and meaningful content. If you think you can't answer others' questions, just ask your own ones.

Do not spam in forums and blogs.

DO IT NOW! Another do-this-from-time-to-time direction: comment on forums and blogs and put a link to your site in your signature (or name).

Hi Dan,
I would like to add something here on the topic of Forum posting. For the last year I have been the Forum Moderator on the SquidU forums over at Squidoo.com and they like to run a tight ship when it comes to the forum rules. Any violation can get you banned from ever posting there again. My point is this, if you are going to post on a forum, make real sure you read the forum rules and the sticky posts at the top for what not to do to get yourself in hot water.

I can't begin to tell you the valuable resource many many people have lost over there because they just went out, violated the TOS, and started spamming links to their sites!

The same thing has happened to many folks I have come in contact with on Twitter, Stumble, Digg, and many other great resources all because they didn't read the TOS and Stickies.

Your thoughts?

Donna

@Donna Goodman

You're absolutely right, Donna, following the rules is a must on any forum or blog. Just like you don't smoke in a non-smoking area unless you want to get fined you don't violate the TOS of a forum or you'll get banned.

Read the rules, stick with them, contribute to the community and you are sure to reap the benefits of blog and forum posting.

Tip of the day, Donna.
I just started working on my social networking, twitter, facebook, linkedin, etc. and have not even glanced at their Terms of Service.
I will now, right away!
Thanks so much.

Hi Dan,
Yesterday, I was checking my competitor back links. Some pages have rel="nofollow" links of my competitor, but still that pages show in google index. Can you explain me why these pages show in google index. Thanks in advance.

@waseem qamar

The pages are indexed by Google, but the 'nofollow' attribute is for links, not for pages. In simple words, links with the 'nofollow' attribute don't give you actual SEO value.
